Winegrape growers in the northern SJV can get a new economic guide to growing in their area from the U.C. Cooperative Extension. The study focuses on producing grapes that do well in the valley climate, like French Colombard, Ruby Cabernet and Rubired. It is based on assumptions grounded in local costs so that growers can apply the findings from the hypothetical vineyard to their own operations. The study is free online at the link below or for $3 direct from the Davis. A cost study, "Sample Costs to Produce Organic Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Grapes in the North Coast, Napa Valley," shows the sample costs of establishing and producing organically grown cabernet sauvignon wine grapes in the Napa Valley. The cost study can be used to make production decisions, determine potential returns, prepare budgets, and evaluate all costs associated with organic grape growing in Napa Valley, from equipment to labor. The study is based on a hypothetical 35-acre drip-irrigated farm operation on a 10% slope in the Napa Valley, over the first 3 years of establishment. See link below.
